Here at How-To Geek, we’ve covered many different ways to reset your password for Windows—but what if you can’t reset your password? Or what if you’re using drive encryption that would wipe out your files if you changed the password? It’s time to crack the password instead.
To accomplish this, we’ll use a tool called Ophcrack that can crack your password so you can login without having to change it.
Windows Password Key Free Software
Download Ophcrack
The first thing we will need to do is download the CD image from Ophcrack’s website. There are two options to download, XP or Vista, so make sure you grab the right one. The Vista download works with Windows Vista or Windows 7, and the only difference between XP and Vista is the “tables” Ophcrack uses to determine the password.
Once the .iso file is downloaded, burn it to a CD using the guide below.
If you are going to be cracking your password on something that doesn’t have a CD drive, such as a netbook, download the universal USB creator from PenDrive Linux (Link Below). A USB drive will not only run faster but you can also use a single USB drive for Windows XP, Vista, and 7 if you copy the needed tables to the drive.
To create a USB drive that works with all versions of Windows, download the free password tables from Ophcrack’s website.
Note: There are free tables available on Ophcrack’s website and there are paid tables, the paid tables will typically get the job done faster and will be able to crack more complex passwords but the paid tables may not fit on a USB drive because they range in size from 3 GB to 135 GB.
Now extract the tables to tablesvista_free on the USB drive and they will be used automatically by Ophcrack.
Boot from CD/USB
Boot the computer from the CD or USB drive that you created.
Note: On some computers you may have to go into the BIOS settings to change the boot order or push a key to show the boot menu.
Once the disk is done booting, Ophcrack should start automatically and will begin cracking the passwords for all of the users on your computer.
Note: If the computer boots and you only have a blank screen or Ophcrack doesn’t start, try restarting the computer and selecting manual or low RAM options on the live CD boot menu.
If you have a complex password it will take a lot longer than simple passwords, and with the free tables your password may never be cracked. Once the crack is done you will see the password in plain text, write it down and reboot the machine to login. If your password isn’t cracked, you can also log in as one of the other users with admin rights and then change your password from within Windows.
With the free tables available you will not be able to crack every password, but the paid tables range from $100 to $1000 so you may be better off just resetting your password with on of these tutorials:
You can get all of the software needed for password cracking from these links.
Use the Windows key + E keyboard shortcut to open File Explorer. How to upload files to an FTP server on Windows 10Keep in mind that the method shown above is only useful to test, browse, and download files from an FTP site. Note your public IP address from the results and type it into the address bar using the FTP link format and press Enter. If you get a login prompt, then everything is working as expected. You have to use the following instructions to be able to browse, download and upload files. Simply enter your account credentials and you're should be able to sign-in. How to build a home server.
If you aren’t using drive encryption and you’ve got a tough password, it’s usually much faster to reset the password using one of the tools above, but we like to show you all the different techniques that you can use.

There are a wide variety of operation systems but Microsoft OS Covers more than 70% of OS market. Windows XP was launched as a part of NT family computer systems. XP was launched on 24 Aug 2001, with wide range of new features and functionality such as IPv4 support, more stability, enhanced GUI, improved imaging features such as Windows Picture and Fax preview, enhanced image and thumbnail caching in Explorer. It can run smoothly over a machine with 128 MB RAM on the other hand Windows 7 requires at least 700MB RAM for smooth functioning.
Windows XP was released in two major editions, Home Edition and Professional Edition. Passwords basically act as a key which opens door of sensitive data and user information. So many people have set passwords for their computer.
SAM, Security Accounts manager, contains all the password of accounts in encrypted form. These files cannot be decrypted as they have one way encryption but they can be accessed offline so as to reset the passwords. The net user command is used to add, remove, and make changes to the user accounts on a computer, all from the Command Prompt and we’ll use this command to change systems accounts password.
But What if we just forget the passwords? So, below are 8 ways starting from easy to moderate level to crack or reset the Windows XP administrator password.
Method 1: Using password cracker for Windows XP
It is really annoying if you have forgotten your Windows XP password and cannot log in. But there are many Windows XP password cracker software available to solve this problem. Here we will introduce Wondershare LiveBoot to crack your Windows XP password.
1. Download and install Wondershare LiveBoot on another computer.
2. After running Liveboot on your computer, the program interface will be displayed as follow. Insert the prepared CD or usb drive into the computer, and follow the instruction to burn a bootable USB or CD. The burning will start in 1 click then. If you don't you have no burner on your computer, you can also choose to burn with a usb drive, which can be directly burned with this program.
3. Then connect the bootable disk or USB to the computer, whose administrator password you forgot. Run the computer and press F12 in start window to enter the Boot Device Menu when the system begins. Then select the USB CD-ROM Drive and hit on Enter, and you are getting the screen as follow. Choose to 'Boot from LiveBoot', and it will take you several minutes to load the Windows files before you get into the system.
4. After entering the computer, click on the 'Password & Key Finder' menu on the LiveBoot to get the 'Admin Password Resetter', which enables you to reset the password you forget as blank. All you need to do is to perform one click on the green button of 'Admin Password Resetter'. Then you can disconnect the disk and restart the computer. You'll find you can get into the computer directly without being asked for password.
Method 2: XP Hidden Administrator Account
1. Windows XP comes with a hidden Administrator account which can be accessed by following ways so that lost password of other admin accounts can be changed from this default Administrator Account. On Windows XP login Screen panel, hit Ctrl+Alt+Del twice after that a login panel will pop up. Just enter user name as Administrator and hit enter.
2. While you are logged in as admin and you need to change any user account passwords just go to Run and type cmd now enter net user and then hit enter. It will show all users on this machine.
3. Now enter net user [account_name] *
Eg: net user hi *
It will ask for new password, and then you can enter a new one as your wish. From the next login you will have to enter this password for respective account.
Method 3: Through Safe Mode
Restart the system press F8 key to boot in safe mode from there log in Administrator Account without password. This is an easy way and mostly works if default hidden administrator is not changed.
Method 4: Using windows Xp-bootable Disc
1. Select Boot from CD option from BIOS menu and insert bootable disc, just press any key when prompted like “Press any key to boot from CD”.Follow the Setup procedures and accept license agreement by hitting F8.
Iot wiki. 2. Use arrow keys to select XP installation (if you only have one, it should already be selected) and press R to begin the Repair process. After successful completion of repair windows will restart and again will display “Press any key to boot from CD”.
3. Just don’t do anything, and it will boot automatically now when you see Installing Device Bar in lower left bottom corner. Press Shift+F10 this will open console now.
4. Write command nusrmgr.cpl. To edit passwords or remove them, you can also type Change userpasswords2 in console to add new user with any password. Now login with new credentials after the repair process completes successfully.
Method 5: Using regedit
1. Once you get the console type regedit.
2. This will open the registry menu now navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionWinlogonSpecialAccountsUserList in the Registry Editor.
3.Now double click Administrator option in the right panel. But if it is not there then do right click in the right side panel and select new Dword and name it as Administrator and hit enter. Then do a double click on newly created option and enter value to 1 and press Ok.
4. Now restart the window you will see a new Administrator user login without password an make it to change password of the lost account.
Method 6: Using regedit again
1. Once you get the console type “regedit” (command for opening Registry) and press Enter. From now on we have to be extra careful as one mistake might degrade our operating System and make it unusable. In the left side of the Registry Editor click “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE” then in File menu click “Load Hive”.
2. Now Browse for Following path: Windows Os drive[c]:windowssystem32configSAM
Note: This SAM file stands For Security Accounts manager, which is responsible for managing all credentials of system accounts so it basically contains encrypted information about the account names and passwords. Facerig live2d module free download full.
3. After loading the Hive, it will ask for a name, type anything you can remember. In my case I will give a name “pass”. So now the SAM file is loaded into registry for editing.
4.Now go to following directory “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE estSAMDomainsAccountUsers”. Click on “000001F4” and from the right side panel double-click the “F” entry.
5. A new window will open and you can edit the “F” entry. The line that starts with “0038” is what you want to edit. The value next to “0038” is “11”, replace it with “10”. Be careful not to change anything else. Just double click the “11” and type “10” then hit the OK button. “11” is for disabled and “10” for enabled.
6. Back in the Registry Editor, from the left side click on the name you gave to the hive you loaded earlier and click “Unload Hive” from the file menu, restart the computer and you are done. The Administrator account is now enabled.
I recently helped a client recover his forgotten Windows password by using a couple of different tools. We eventually were able to reset the Administrator password to a blank password so that he could log into Windows. It was a fairly long and complicated process, but it worked. Unfortunately, there is no “one” way to reset a Windows password and depending on what version of Windows you are running, you might have to try different methods.
In the end, there is also no real guarantee that you’ll be able to crack the password. There are already so many articles written on how to recover or reset a password that I’m not going to reinvent the wheel, but instead will guide you to the best online resources that I have used to crack my Windows password.
1. Ophcrack Live CD – My favorite ways to blank out or crack a Windows password is to use a Linux Live CD. These are special distributions of Linux that run directly from the CD (no installation required) and are specially designed for cracking Windows passwords. You can read the documentation to learn how to use it.
Simply burn the ISO and boot using the CD and the program will get right to work. It may not work, however, on very complicated passwords because it actually tries to determine the password rather than reset it. My buddy over at the How-To Geek site has a great tutorial on using Ophcrack.
Also, Ophcrack uses password tables to brute force crack the user passwords. You can download their free tables, but that won’t crack long passwords. For those cases, you can purchase larger password tables that range from $100 to $1000.
2. Offline NT Password and Registry Editor – This is a very small program, only 3MB in size that you can burn to a CD and boot to. It’ll auto-detect the Windows installation and the account names (that is if everything was installed in the default Windows directories). Using this program you can reset or blank out a Windows password, which means it doesn’t matter how long or complicated it is.
The program was recently updated after four years and now supports cracking passwords all the way up to Windows 8. It’s a bit hard to use, but About.com has a great screenshot guide that walks you through the entire process, so be sure to check that out.
3. Login Recovery – Login Recovery is a web site that has a program that you can either download onto a floppy disk or a cd that you than use to boot up with. If the PC is connected to the Internet, it will automatically upload the encrypted data to their servers and begin the process of trying to recover the passwords. If you don’t have an Internet connection, it will generate a file, which you then manually upload to their site.
I have tried this site and it did not work for my password, which was 11 characters and mostly symbols, numbers, and letters. However, if the password is something simpler, they will probably be able to crack it.
4. John The Ripper – Another free password cracker that works on Windows, Linux and Macs, so it’s useful for any Mac or Linux user who wants to recovery a password. Pretty easy to use and comes with good instructions, so most people can follow along. If you want a step by step guide on using John the Ripper, check out this article from 101Hacker.com.
5. Knoppix STD – G4TV has a good article on another Linux distro you can download and use to crack your Windows password. Follow the detailed instructions he gives and if the password is not too long or difficult, it should be able to crack it!
As you can tell, the best ways to crack a Windows password is using Linux! It might be a little too techie for some people, but it’s definitely worth it if you want to avoid having to re-install Windows and lose all of your data! Any questions, post a comment!
